Rosemont police arrest Chicago man on charges of fleeing, possessing stolen items

A Chicago man who prosecutors say told Rosemont police he went "downtown to participate in looting" was ordered held on $100,000 bail Wednesday on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

Darius Williams, 24, faces felony charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault to a police officer, along with misdemeanor possession of stolen property and reckless driving charges.

Authorities say his arrest came after an auxiliary police officer saw Williams driving a silver sedan with passenger-side damage and unreadable license plates about 5 p.m. Monday in Rosemont. Officers trailed and attempted to pull over the vehicle, which prosecutors say passed through five stop signs.

At one point, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney C.J. Orrantia said, Williams nearly sideswiped a squad car. It "continued to flee" until it was stopped at Scott and Hope streets, Orrantia said.

Inside the car police found three watches, two car batteries, liquor bottles and drugstore containers, all of which prosecutors say came from Chicago stores.

After his arrest, Williams "made admissions to going downtown to participate in looting," Orrantia said.

Williams is scheduled to return to court June 17.
