Man dies in Westmont house fire

A man in his 50s was killed Wednesday morning when fire swept through a house on the 500 block of South Adams Street in Westmont, authorities said.

Firefighters found the man unresponsive at the top of the stairs with second-degree burns and apparent smoke inhalation. He was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he was pronounced dead.

Firefighters responded to the call at 11:56 a.m. and police arriving on the scene confirmed smoke was coming from the tri-level home. Fire crews arrived at noon and the fire was fully extinguished at 12:24 p.m.

No other victims were found.

Neighbors told firefighters there was smoke in the air for up to 30 minutes before the 911 call.

The blaze is being investigated by the DuPage County Task Force, Westmont police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which is typical protocol when there is a fatality. The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
