Chicago man apprehended in Lake County, charged with kidnapping toddler
Lake County sheriff's officers apprehended a Chicago man this week who is charged with child abduction in McHenry County, authorities said.
A judge set bail for Dvino E. Thomas, 34, of the 5500 block of South Hamilton Avenue, at $50,000, Sgt. Aimee Knop, spokeswoman for the McHenry County sheriff's office, said Friday. Thomas remained behind bars Friday.
Sgt. Christopher Covelli, spokesman for the Lake County sheriff's office, said Marengo police informed area police agencies at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday that Thomas had abducted a child in Marengo.
According to Marengo police, Thomas had been visiting with a 2-year-old child. Thomas - who is possibly the child's father but has no parental rights - returned to the mother's Marengo home and they began to argue, Covelli said. Thomas took the toddler and left, Covelli said.
Covelli said Lake County deputies were familiar with Thomas from previous run-ins. Officers located Thomas at about 11 a.m. near the intersection of Grass Lake Road and Sunset Drive outside of Antioch. Thomas was taken into custody shortly after near the intersection of Monaville Road and Avon Drive outside of Lake Villa.
The toddler was found safe in the vehicle and returned to a family member, according to Covelli.
Thomas was previously sentenced to 30 months of probation, 77 days in Lake County jail and 100 hours of public service for his role in a 2015 attack against a woman who said she was beaten and held at gunpoint. He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery in August 2016 as part of a plea deal.
Thomas is next due in court on his current charges Monday, Knop said.
