Prospect Heights announces cancellation of summer Block Party

For the first time in 40 years, summer in Prospect Heights won't include the community's annual Block Party.

Organizers announced Tuesday that the summer event has been canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision was made by the Prospect Heights city and park district officials in the interest of public safety.

The fest annually attracts hundreds of attendees and gathering a crowd of that size this summer will be difficult to manage with state safety guidelines in place, officials said.

"I know this is disappointing news for many," said Christina Ferraro, executive director of the Prospect Heights Park District.

"This is not just a matter of canceling an event, it is about caring for the entire community."
