Barrington District 220 lauded for music program

A national organization has named Barrington Area Unit District 220 one of the best school systems for music education in the United States.

The recognition, announced this week, came from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. District 220 is one of just 19 school systems in Illinois to receive the designation for its commitment to provide music access and education to all students.

"Music education provides students with a 21st century skill set that sets them up for future success," said Brigid Tileston, Barrington 220's director of fine, visual and performing arts. "Through music education, students develop skills in the areas of creativity, collaboration, leadership and communication. All of these skills are necessary in an ever-changing and interactive world."

To qualify for the designation, District 220 officials answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation and more. The information was verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

All District 220 elementary school students participate in general music classes. Many stay with it, as evidenced by 400 students enrolled in Barrington High School music classes, along with opportunities for co-curricular programs such as a cappella groups and marching band.
