2020 Arts Unlimited District 214, Daily Herald Community Art & Writing Contest winners
Art, poetry and fiction writing aren't talents that are supposed to fade away after high school. But adult life often intrudes.
The annual Arts Unlimited District 214/Daily Herald Community Art and Writing Contest primarily celebrates adults in our community who, despite the pressures of adulthood, have continued to pursue their passion for the arts. Teens are allowed to enter, too.
We are proud to present the 2020 winners.
Here they are:
Visual art
Judged by artist Liz Schrenk.
1st place: “Brooklyn (coloredlights)” by Abby Franke, Elk Grove Village. Judge's comment: This lively portrait is engaging and relatable, successfully deploying light and color in a unique and detailed composition. The subject's expression playfully responds to the colored lights while the artist makes great use of space, repetition and reflection.
2nd place: “Menticide” by Angelina Scianna, Mount Prospect. Judge's comment: Combining digital processes, this powerful piece illustrates the fearful implications of the influence of technology. By juxtaposing light and shadow with complimentary colors, the artist pulls us into the world of this trapped figure.
3rd place: “Hanging Thoughts” by Samantha Micklewright, Arlington Heights. Judge's comment: Using layered and textural color, this artist invites us to look more closely at this dark and foreboding tableau.
Prose
Judged by William Leece, author and retired English teacher.
1st place: “A Puncher's Chance” by Michael Hurley, Mount Prospect
2nd place: “March Rain, Year 2 Scholars, New South Wales” by Bev Ottaviano, Arlington Heights
3rd place: “True Friends” by Angella Lee, Arlington Heights
