Elgin police looking for four men after battery of store clerk

Elgin police are asking the public's help in identifying four men after a store clerk was beaten earlier this month.

Police said they responded to a call at about 6:52 p.m. March 11 about a theft and aggravated battery at a store at Clock Tower Plaza in Elgin.

According to the police report, the four men came into the store and one started browsing while the others took a look around, police spokeswoman Kirstie Hilton said. Two of the men left the store. Inside, one kept browsing while one stayed near the front door, she said.

One of the men then reached over the counter, grabbed a box of shoes and started walking toward the front door, she said. The clerk confronted the man and a physical confrontation ensued, she said.

The store clerk was taken to the hospital, Hilton said.

The police department's major investigation division is investigating and seeking assistance with identifying the four men. Anyone with information is asked to call (847) 289-2600, or text a tip to 847411 and include ElginPD in the beginning of the text, along with the information.
