Two Cook County jail inmates positive for COVID-19

Two Cook County jail detainees tested positive for COVID-19 Monday, according to Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart.

The two men - a 42-year-old in custody since late December 2019 and an 18-year-old in custody since mid-February 2020 - are in isolation cells at Cermak Health Services, where they have been since they exhibited flu-like symptoms March 20, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The older inmate is held in lieu of a $250,000 bond on aggravated DUI charges. The teen is held without bail on aggravated discharge of a firearm charges.

On Sunday, Dart announced a correctional officer who had worked in the Residential Treatment Unit tested positive for COVID-19. That officer is self-isolating at home.

According to the sheriff's office, barracks that once housed inmates in the boot camp program will be opened to house detainees in isolation if necessary. That 500-bed facility is located away from the main jail.
