Wehrli leading in DuPage Forest Preserve District 5

Republican incumbent Mary Lou Wehrli appears on her way to capturing her party's nomination for the District 5 seat she currently holds on the DuPage Forest Preserve District commission.

Wehrli garnered 3,862 votes in Tuesday's GOP primary while challenger Carl Schultz got 2,393 votes, according to unofficial election results with 75 of 164 precincts reporting.

The GOP nominee will advance to the November general election to face Naperville Democrat Barbara O'Meara, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Since 2012, Wehrli has represented the district that includes all or parts of Naperville, Lisle, Warrenville and Aurora. Her victory on Tuesday prevented Schultz from reclaiming the seat he held from 2002 to 2012.

During the campaign, Wehrli said she's been an independent voice who sought to have board meetings streamed online and pushed to eliminate pensions for elected officials.
