Authorities identify victim of fatal shooting in Aurora

The victim of a fatal shooting just before midnight Feb. 7 in Aurora has been identified as John H. Smith, 20, of the 400 block of Sherman Avenue.

Police said they found Smith with a gunshot wound to the chest in an apartment on Sherman Avenue on the city's southeast side. Paramedics from the Aurora Fire Department took him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Monday and toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensic lab for analysis. The preliminary cause of death is consistent with a gunshot wound, authorities said.

The Kane County coroner's office is cooperating with the Aurora Police Department in its ongoing investigation.
