Aurora woman arrested, charged with intent to deliver meth

An Aurora woman faces prison after being arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver after a traffic stop prompted by her using a cellphone.

Breanna Maldonado, 22, of the 500 block of South Spencer Street, faces charges of armed violence, possession of 15 to 100 grams of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop in Aurora last week, according to Kane County court records.

Aurora police pulled over Maldonado's 2005 green Land Rover at 11:46 p.m. Feb. 5 on North Lake Street and West Illinois Avenue on the city's near west side, records show.

She was cited for using her cellphone and transportation of open alcohol, and authorities found two digital scales and a glass pipe in her vehicle, according to court records.

Charging documents for the armed violence charge - when a defendant is armed while in the commission of a felony - only indicate Maldonado was armed with a "dangerous weapon."

Paris Lewbel, spokesman for Aurora Police, could not immediately specify the amount of methamphetamine seized, or the weapon Maldonado is accused of possessing.

The weapon is unlikely to be a firearm - under state law, if Maldonado was in possession of a firearm in her vehicle, she also would have been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

If convicted of either of the most severe charges of armed violence or meth possession with intent to deliver, Maldonado faces a sentence of six to 30 years in prison with no chance of probation.

Maldonado is held at the Kane County jail on $80,000 bail, meaning she must post $8,000 in order to be released while the charges are pending. She is next due in court Feb. 19.
