Palatine's JOURNEYS launches fund drive for new facility

A Palatine a nonprofit organization is about to launch a capital campaign to help fund an overnight homeless shelter and supportive living facility as part of a new, 3-story headquarters on Northwest Highway.

JOURNEYS-The Road Home will kick off the fundraising initiative as part of the Leap Into HOPE Casino Night from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at Metropolis Ballroom, 6 S. Vail Ave. in downtown Arlington Heights. Officials will unveil the Building for HOPE campaign during the festivities.

In March 2019, the Palatine village council approved the plan for the 3-story building just north of the current facility at 1140 E. Northwest Hwy. The new JOURNEYS would be between a U.S. Postal Service facility and a self-storage business, across the street from Arlington Park racecourse in Arlington Heights.

JOURNEYS plans to construct the 27,000-square-foot facility on a 1-acre site, with the existing 8,000-square-foot building being demolished. The new facility would be open 24 hours a day and eliminate the need for a lottery system to help those in need of shelter, officials said.

Plans call for first-floor offices, a supportive services center for long-term case management, primary health care, substance abuse treatment, vocational development and other operations.

The second story would have 42 beds for PADS clients to use overnight on the second level and 11 permanent, affordable, supportive living apartments on the third floor.

As for the Leap Into HOPE Casino Night at Metropolis, the fun will include blackjack, craps, roulette, a split-the-pot raffle and a high-stakes poker game. Tickets are $75. That donation includes $25 in casino chips, food and a three-hour open bar.
