Schaumburg man held on $1 million bail on molestation allegations

A Schaumburg man was ordered held on $1 million cash bail Monday on charges he sexually abused a girl over several years beginning when she was in fifth grade.

Juan Moreno-Perez, 44, must come up with the entire bail amount to be released from Cook County jail. If convicted, Moreno-Perez faces up to 60 years in prison.

Prosecutors say the abuse began during the 2015-16 school year and continued about once a week.

The accuser kept a calendar on which she marked the days she was abused, but the calendar was inadvertently thrown out by another person, said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Nicole Murphy.

The girl told a friend about the abuse on Jan. 21 and subsequently spoke to a teacher and school counselor, Murphy said.

On Jan. 25, Moreno-Perez walked into the Schaumburg Police Department and "made admissions," Murphy said.

Moreno-Perez has misdemeanor convictions for battery, driving without a license and theft, Murphy said.

He next appears in court on Feb. 13.
