Seniors receive property tax considerations

Senior citizens may qualify for special property tax exemptions, as well as a Cook County property tax deferral program.

Senior Exemptions are available for homeowners born in 1954 or earlier. First-time senior exemption recipients will need to apply through their township. However, residents who have already received the senior exemption will now be automatically renewed.

Senior Tax Freeze Exemptions are available for homeowners born in 1954 or earlier with a 2018 income of $65,000 or less. Senior freeze exemptions must be renewed annually.

Questions can be directed to the township in which the homeowner resides. Exemptions are due Feb. 13.

Additionally, senior citizens whose annual household income is $55,000 or less can apply to the Cook County Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral program to cover property tax payments. The deadline is March 1. Visit cookcountytreasurer.com and click the "Seniors" tab.
