Learning about states of matter is a gas for Libertyville students

Second-grade students at Butterfield School in Libertyville got a lesson Thursday about what really matters - matter.

High Touch High Tech's Mia Spaid presented the "What's the Matter" program to about 65 students. The 50-minute sessions, which were held in various classrooms, explored the three states of physical matter - solid, liquid and gas.

Spaid introduced a variety of experiments using vinegar, baking soda and dish soap. The rooms were filled with laughter and amazement as the students witnessed the physical and chemical changes to matter.

Butterfield second-grade teacher Riley Paulus said the program aligns with some of the science projects in class.

"It's nice to have an opportunity for hands-on science experiments that we can't do on a daily basis," Paulus said. "And they love it, as you can see."
