Hawthorn Mall collecting mascara wands to help wildlife

Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills will host a "Wands for Wildlife" event from Feb. 14 to 29, to recycle old mascara wands for use in wildlife rehabilitation.

Appalachian Wildlife Refuge, a nonprofit in western North Carolina, uses the wands to remove fly eggs and larva from rescued animals.

Those wishing to participate can donate their used and cleaned mascara wands to Hawthorn Mall. In exchange, the shopping center will provide a $15 gift voucher to Sephora for every 10 wands donated. Mascara wand donations can be delivered to the mall management office on the lower level near the play area weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or at My Perks Lounge from noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
