Rosemont could condemn two buildings for new police building

Rosemont trustees Wednesday authorized acquiring two final manufacturing buildings near the Allstate Arena by condemnation - to make way for a new public safety department building - but officials say they're still talking with the property owners in hopes of brokering a deal.

"We're negotiating with both owners for a negotiated sale, but we needed to authorize condemnation if those conversations go south," Mayor Brad Stephens said.

Buildings occupied by Nicholas Machine & Tool and Kass Industries on Barry Street are the last two that village officials say they need as part of plans for a one-story, 100,000-square-foot public safety headquarters. More than half of the dozen buildings the village has purchased in recent years have been demolished.

Construction on the new building could start this summer.
