South Barrington rejects recreational marijuana businesses

The South Barrington village board has voted to ban recreational marijuana businesses in town.

Recreational pot use by those 21 and older becomes legal in Illinois on Jan. 1. Towns can't outlaw its use, but they are allowed to prohibit businesses that sell it or restrict their operations.

South Barrington trustees decided at a meeting last week to opt out of allowing the businesses.

In bordering Inverness, Village Administrator Sam Trakas said no official determination has been made. Inverness does not have traditional retail locations and only a single office park, which is limited to professional businesses.
