South Barrington hosting public hearing Tuesday on recreational pot

The South Barrington Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing Tuesday to consider whether the village should allow the sale of marijuana for recreational use and, if so, under what circumstances.

The hearing is set for 7 p.m. at village hall, 30 S. Barrington Road. The panel ultimately will make a recommendation to the village board, which has final say over the issue.

Recreational use of marijuana becomes legal in Illinois on Jan. 1. Municipalities cannot outlaw use or possession, but can pass a measure barring marijuana businesses from town or placing restrictions on where and how they operate.

All those at Tuesday's hearing will be afforded an opportunity to be heard, according to the village.
