The season of giving: Island Lake volunteers pack Thanksgiving meals

Volunteers kept busy at Island Lake's village hall Tuesday preparing boxes of holiday food for local residents and families in need.

It's the fourth straight year the village and community-minded residents have teamed up to fill boxes with turkeys, potatoes and all the other fixings needed for a nice Thanksgiving dinner.

Led by Connie Mascillino, the president of the Historical Society of Island Lake, volunteers including many Lionesses from the local Lions Club who scurried about and helped sort, pack and prepare the boxes for delivery later in the day.

Funding for the program came from collection jars that were set out in area stores, as well as donations from several business and a $500 gift from the Lions Club.

The program also distributes meal prep boxes at Christmas.
