Books come to life as students present 'The Enchanted Bookshop' in Gurnee

Fourth- and fifth-graders in Woodland Elementary District 50 in Gurnee are putting on a fantastical stage play set in an all-too-real location, a struggling bookstore. But in this situation, the characters in the books come to life at night.

Plenty of familiar characters, including Tom Sawyer, Dorothy Gale and Pollyanna, share stage time. They help the scatterbrained owner, Olivia Wood, save her store, called A Likely Story, and stop a pair of thieves looking for stolen jewelry hidden inside one of the books.

The Woodland Intermediate Drama Club presents "The Enchanted Bookshop" at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Woodland Intermediate School, 1115 Hunt Club Road, Gurnee. Tickets are $5 and children under 12 are free.
