A driver whose car struck a traffic signal in Naperville and caught fire now faces charges in the crash, which split the car in half, authorities said Friday.

Robert M. Skura, 47, of Lisle is accused of running into a traffic signal Oct. 4 at Ogden Avenue and Columbia Street, Naperville police said.

Skura has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and speeding 35 mph over the posted limit as well as disobeying a traffic signal, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper lane use, police said.

After the crash at 9:49 p.m. on a Friday, police said, paramedics took Skura to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Naperville police trained in crash reconstruction investigated the scene, closing and rerouting traffic away from the intersection for roughly seven hours.

Their preliminary investigation found Skura was driving east on Ogden toward Columbia when he lost control of his 2014 BMW and struck the traffic signal at the southeast corner of the intersection.

Police said they are still seeking additional information about the crash; anyone with details should call the traffic unit at (630) 420-8833.
