Volo now has Lake Michigan water
Volo's water supply switched from local wells to Lake Michigan this week, officials announced.
Crews were scheduled to begin flushing fire hydrants Wednesday to help move water through the system. Lake water should be circulating through the entire system by the end of the week, Village Administrator Michael May said.
The village water system is part of a regional endeavor overseen by a utility called the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency. Volo teamed with Wauconda to extend CLCJAWA's pipes to the two villages. Volo's share of the project could be as much as $12 million, May said.
Lake Michigan water began coming out of Wauconda's faucets about two weeks ago. The effort, which took years to plan and complete, cost Wauconda nearly $48 million.
