Lake County approves road projects in Lindenhurst, Barrington areas

Construction season is winding down, but Lake County officials are planning ahead by authorizing nearly $7 million for future road projects.

The county board on Tuesday approved two measures involving pending work for road projects in the Lindenhurst/Old Mill Creek and Barrington/Deer Park areas. Besides traditional road improvements, both involve closing gaps and other work to improve access for pedestrians and trail users.

Both are examples of how the Lake County Division of Transportation incorporates "multimodal components" into projects, said Ann Maine, a member of the county board's public works, transportation and planning committee.

"I think it's important to note our transportation (system) isn't just about the roads," she said.

The largest expense approved Tuesday was for a companion project to the recently completed Millburn bypass of Route 45 in north central Lake County. County officials plan an opening celebration on Oct. 23 for the extensive $34 million bypass and related work to eliminate a congestion hot spot known as the Millburn Strangler.

The county board Tuesday appropriated $5.24 million of matching funds and about $1.1 million in bridge tax funds to resurface and fill sidewalk and bike path gaps.

Work planned for next year involves resurfacing Grass Lake Road from Deep Lake Road to west of realigned Route 45; Millburn Road from Old Route 45 to Hunt Club Road; and Old Route 45 between the north and south connections ends of the bypass, which runs from Country Place to just north of Independence Boulevard in Old Mill Creek and Lindenhurst.

A new sidewalk and bike path are planned on Grass Lake Road from Deep Lake Road to west of Savage Road and Beck Road to the Millennium Trail.

The work will provide a nonmotorized connection between the Sun Lake, Hastings Lake and McDonald Woods forest preserves, as well as residential subdivisions and schools in the area.

In a separate action, the county board authorized and agreement with STV Inc. of Chicago for design engineering of improvements at the intersection of Ela and Long Grove roads in Barrington and Deer Park for a maximum cost of $594,225.

Work will include the addition of turn lanes and a traffic signal, as well as bike lanes and a multiuse path connection to the Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve Trail. Construction is targeted for 2022.
