Kitchen fire leaves apartment near Des Plaines uninhabitable

A kitchen fire left an apartment uninhabitable Friday in an unincorporated area near Des Plaines, authorities said.

The fire broke out at 10 a.m. in one apartment of a six-unit building on the 1000 block of Holly Lane, which is east of the Tri-State Tollway and north of Golf Road. All occupants of the building evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, and no one was injured, said District Chief Thomas Hoeft of the North Maine Fire Protection District.

A single engine was able to extinguish the fire, containing it to that unit. An estimate of damages was not yet available, and the cause remained under investigation.
