Man charged in Palatine sexual assault of woman at Falcon Park track

Palatine police say a man has been charged in the July 13 sexual assault of a woman at Falcon Park.

Police announced Thursday that Simon Alcantar-Cruz, 28, of unincorporated Cook County near Palatine, was charged with aggravated battery criminal sexual abuse and unlawful restraint.

Tips from those who recognized the suspect in a photo released by police and work from investigators led to the man's arrest Wednesday.

Alcantar-Cruz made a statement implicating himself in the attack, authorities said. He's held on $750,000 bail at Cook County jail.

Police said the 19-year-old Palatine woman reported she was sexually assaulted while running on the North Hicks Road park's outdoor track about 9:20 p.m. The woman said not know the offender and she was able to fight him off. The suspect fled on a black bicycle.
