Wheeling Township offers help with property reassessments

The Wheeling Township assessor's office is available to assist property owners with assessment appeals to the Cook County assessor's office and subsequently to the Cook County Board of Review.

Township taxpayers should have received notification in their mailboxes with their triennial reassessment in early July. Upon receiving the notification, residents have 30 days to appeal their reassessments. The deadline date is located at the bottom of the notice.

The assessor's office also will help residents with applications for exemptions, including homeowner, senior, senior freeze, disabled veterans and disabled persons.

"Property tax appeals can be an overwhelming and time-consuming process," Assessor Jerry Sadler said. "Wheeling Township is proud to offer assistance and guidance to our community during this period for appeals."

Once completed, appeals are reviewed, and decisions are made by the Cook County assessor's office. Decision letters and emails will be sent to the appellant after the close of appeals, which can take up to three months. If an appeal is successful and the assessed value is reduced, it will be reflected on the 2019 second installment tax bill due in July 2020.
