Man charged with selling more than 400 grams of cocaine in Schaumburg

A 27-year-old Cicero man who authorities described as a "source of cocaine in the Cook County area" was ordered held on $150,000 bail Tuesday on charges he sold more than 400 grams of cocaine to an undercover officer in Schaumburg.

Prosecutors said the officer from the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force and Juan Avila-Leyva used a multimedia messaging app to arrange the buys, which took place from May 17 through July 1 on the 0-100 block of Woodfield Mall Road.

Avila-Leyva was charged with five counts of delivery of a controlled substance.

According to prosecutors, Avila-Leyva sold the officer 14.5 grams of cocaine for $550 on May 17. On May 24, the officer purchased 28.5 grams from the defendant for $1,250, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Nicole Murphy. The officer purchased 57.9 grams of cocaine for $2,200 on June 4 and an additional 117.3 grams for $4,000 on June 11, she said.

Avila-Leyva was arrested July 1 after he sold the officer 224 grams of cocaine for $7,500, Murphy said.

Avila-Leyva next appears in court on July 25.
