Three charged with drug-induced homicide in Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake police have arrested two people and are searching for a third in a March overdose of fentanyl-laced heroin that killed a 32-year-old woman.

Kane E. Kellett, 34, of Crystal Lake, Melissa R. Ohlson, 41, of Woodstock, and Jeffrey J. Hauck, 34, of Crystal Lake, have each been charged drug-induced homicide and delivery of a controlled substance, both felonies, in connection with the death of the woman, who was found unresponsive at 3:26 a.m. March 6 at a house on the 0-99 block of Talcott Avenue.

In a news release Friday, police said "items on scene indicated illegal drug use was possibly the cause of death."

"Ultimately, it was discovered heroin and fentanyl were delivered to the deceased female prior to her death. This was later determined by the Coroner's Office to be the cause of death," police said in the release.

Kellett was already held at the McHenry County jail on two unrelated charges of possession of a controlled substance/hypodermic needle and threatening a public official, records show. Ohlson was arrested this week after warrants were issued Wednesday, police said.

Hauck, police said, it still at large.

Crystal Lake Deputy Chief Thomas Kotlowski declined to release the name and hometown of the deceased woman. He also declined to say if authorities were investigating anyone beyond the three people charged in the March overdose.

Kellett is held on $20,000 bail, meaning he must post $2,000 to be released while the cases are pending. Ohlson is held at the McHenry County jail on $15,000 bail. Both are due in court Monday.

If convicted of the most severe charge of drug-induced homicide, each defendant faces a prison term ranging from six to 30 years and it must be served at 85 percent instead of the 50 percent customary for many crimes.
