Re-enactors give Vernon Hills students a glimpse of the Civil War

Seventh-graders at Hawthorn Middle School North took a break from their regular school day Thursday to travel back in time for the Vernon Hills school's 10th annual Civil War Day.

The event featured period music played by the school band, simulated cannon fire, infantry demonstrations and presentations from re-enactors portraying President Abraham Lincoln, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, a preacher, a battlefield surgeon and others.

Teacher Erin Roche, who coordinated the event, said past students count Civil War Day among their favorite school memories.
