South Elgin now has two deputy police chiefs

Newly promoted South Elgin Police Deputy Chief Mike Doty said he looks forward to helping implement new department policies with the goal of earning accreditation through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.

The department now has two deputy chiefs: Doty, promoted last week, is in charge of administration, and Deputy Chief Randy Endean is in charge of operations. "I am excited for the position as the next step in my journey and my career," Doty said.

Thirty-four law enforcement agencies are part of the accreditation program. That means their policies - ranging from use of force to vehicle maintenance - are in line with prescribed "best practices," Doty said.

The department's budget was increased from 32 to 33 sworn officers, Police Chief Jerry Krawczyk said. Doty's salary is $128,689, a $8,000 pay increase. "Mike has done a great job as the administrative sergeant and was already doing many of the tasks he will be doing as the administrative deputy chief," Krawczyk said.

Doty served in the Air Force for 10 years and worked as a 911 operator for Northwest Central Dispatch in Arlington Heights before joining the South Elgin police force in 1997.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2004 and also serves as public information officer. He has a master's degree in management from Webster University and is a graduate of the 10-week school of police staff and command program offered by Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety.
