Elmhurst Road closed near I-90 after tanker truck overturns

Northbound Elmhurst Road between Touhy Avenue and Oakton Street in Des Plaines will be closed for up to 12 hours today as crews clean up after a tanker truck turned over early this morning, authorities said.

Des Plaines police said fuel is leaking from the truck, which reports indicate was carrying denatured alcohol when it rolled over about 7:48 a.m. Denatured alcohol is a poisonous liquid used as a solvent and as fuel for alcohol burners and camping stoves.

Information about possible injuries was not immediately available.

In addition to Elmhurst Road, the off ramps from the Jane Addams Tollway also are closed this morning and are expected to remain unavailable until about 9 p.m., according to the Illinois tollway.
