Volunteers hitting Barrington streets for Les Turner ALS Foundation

Volunteers will hit Barrington streets this weekend in an effort to call attention to ALS and raise money to help find a cure for the disease.

At least 50 volunteers in Barrington are expected to participate from Friday through Sunday in the Chicago-area kickoff for the annual Les Turner ALS Foundation Tag Days drive. The Skokie-based foundation helps those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive neuromuscular disease that has no prevention or cure.

Bob Lee, a Barrington resident and organizer, said volunteers in yellow vests will be at visible intersections, such as Route 59 and Main Street, and at stores.

Depending on schedules, Lee said, it's hoped Barrington High School's varsity softball and baseball teams can assist Saturday and Sunday, continuing a tradition that started about 16 years ago.

Barrington typically tops $10,000 in donations. Tag Days is set for May 11 in St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia.
