Mama Lee's Gourmet Popcorn was awarded Elgin's Black History Month business award by the city council. The owners are Chris (pictured) and Ashley Sumner. The main shop is in Elgin, with two more at Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee and Ford City Mall in Chicago. The latter opened in August.

Marty Angelo teaches sixth graders at Harriet Gifford Elementary School in Elgin. Here he works with Montez Miller, 11, in math class. Angelo recently was honored for his dedication and service as a teacher by Chicago Bears Chairman of the Board George McCaskey. Angelo has worked at the Elgin school for 22 years, but the past year has been perhaps his most challenging after his wife, Melodie, was diagnosed with cancer, and he and his family faced her declining health and prognosis. Melodie Angelo died in September. Angelo is always ready to go above and beyond for his students. He rides the bus home with them each day, makes home visits after too many absent days, attends their sports games on the weekends and happily welcomes back Harriet Gifford alums, including a former student who visited Angelo while on leave from the Army.

Lola and Walter Bohnen, married 55 years, live in Aspired Living of Prospect Heights and have been able to stay together despite their different levels of medical needs. Lola is in assisted living and Walter is in memory care, in the same facility.
