25-year-old elected to Barrington village board

A 25-year-old first-time candidate was among those elected to Barrington village board Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

With all but one Cook County precinct reporting, Emily Young tallied 1,243 votes - finishing in the top three in a four-way race, the results show.

The other top vote-getters earning spots on the board were Kate Duncan with 1,306 votes and incumbent Jason Lohmeyer with 1,290.

Two-year incumbent Trustee Ryan Julian finished last with 1,163. The totals also do not include Cook County early voting and vote by mail ballots.

Duncan, who was appointed to the advisory plan commission and zoning board of appeals in September, ran with Julian and Lohmeyer under the "Barrington Proud" banner.

Barrington's potential for more commercial and residential development was among the campaign issues.

Young, 25, a development and communications manager at Impact Behavioral Health Partners, said there are opportunities that should be pursued in Barrington, such as affordable housing for those with mental health issues or disabilities. She also said the village should be aggressive in seeking commercial development.

Duncan, 40, a partner at the Akerman LLP law firm who is in the land use and development practice, said downtown Barrington has opportunities ripe for additional restaurants and shops that would enhance what already is there.

Lohmeyer, 48, a director of finance at Lifeline Vascular Care, said the village has been seeking potential commercial development by attending trade shows and using other means. He said the 101 West apartment building on Liberty Street is an example of new housing stock that's been constructed since he was elected in 2015.

Julian, 69, a retired telecommunications and finance professional who won a two-year trustee seat in 2017, said that beyond trying to lure more development downtown, it would be worthwhile to create more interest in the Northwest Highway corridor.
