Incumbents prevail in Algonquin village board race

The three incumbents on the Algonquin village board - Debby Sosine, John Spella and Jim Steigert - were re-elected Tuesday, according to unofficial results.

The three trustees were being challenged by Bob Smith, Cynthia Kanner and Paulette Zolicoffer for three, 4-year seats.

Sosine led with 965 votes, followed by Spella with 850 and Steigert with 635. Coming up short were Kanner with 621 votes, Smith with 573 and Zolicoffer with 316, with all precincts reporting in Kane and McHenry counties.

Spella, 58, a business owner who has been on the board since 2003, says he would like to see better communication between residents and elected officials. Pointing to the revitalization of the downtown and the expansion of the Randall Road corridor, he said he sees the village's infrastructure as one of its most prominent issues.

Sosine is an accounting manager with 12 years of village board experience who also has served on various other village committees and community organizations. The 63-year-old stressed the importance of maintaining a balanced budget while serving the community with high-quality services and managing pension costs. She also wants to see more program for downtown businesses.

First elected in 1999, Steigert, 73, says the village has made great strides in expanding economic development and improving transportation. He believes Algonquin is continuing to make progress by expanding the business park with new infrastructure; redeveloping the downtown; and generating growth to the east side of town.
