Incumbents lead in Barrington Library race but Miller close

Barrington Area Library Board incumbents appeared to have won re-election in an unusually heated race fueled in part by a controversy over a proposed realignment of Lake Zurich Road through library property.

The incomplete unofficial returns in Tuesday's election for three seats showed Treasurer Carrie Carr leading with 3,514 votes and Vice President Carolyn Welch Clifford, a longtime board veteran, in second with 3,263 votes. Secretary Barbara Pintozzi was running third with 3,115 votes, followed closely by retired library employee Jan Miller with 3,043. Sales consultant Daniel Goitein trailed with 2,362 votes.

Most of the precincts in Lake and McHenry counties appeared to be in, but two of 14 precincts in Cook County, where Miller was running strong, were still to be counted.

In a split vote last year, the board rejected a land sale that would have allowed for the realignment. Clifford, Carr and Pintozzi voted against the sale despite vocal public support for the realignment, which Barrington Village President Karen Darch also backed.
