Palatine man charged with DUI after rollover crash

A 35-year-old Palatine man faces aggravated driving under the influence and several traffic charges after police say he drove an SUV into a parked vehicle Saturday night, flipped his vehicle on its side and then fled the scene.

Francisco J. Martinez-Serna, of the 900 block of North Sterling Avenue, appeared in Cook County court on the charges Monday, when a judge set bail at $10,000.

He was arrested after Palatine police were called just before 11:15 p.m. Saturday to a reported crash with entrapment in the 1100 block of North Sterling Avenue, authorities said. Officers arrived to find an unoccupied 2005 GMC Envoy flipped on its side.

Based on evidence and witness statements, police said the Envoy was driving south on Sterling when it struck the rear of a parked 2009 Chevy Yukon and flipped on its side. The driver and sole occupant crawled out of the Envoy and walked away, police said.

A witness who spoke to the driver as he left the scene gave police a description of the man. Officers later found a person matching that description, since identified as Martinez-Serna, outside a nearby apartment building bleeding from his hand and appearing intoxicated, police said.

Martinez-Serna admitted to driving the GMC Envoy and being involved in the crash, police said. Further investigation revealed Martinez-Serna used the alias Luis A. Rivera and was wanted under that name for failure to appear warrants for DUI/fleeing and eluding a police officer out of Lake County, and retail theft out of DuPage County, police said.

It also was confirmed that Martinez-Serna's driving privileges were revoked, according to police.

Martinez-Serna is scheduled to return to court April 25 in Rolling Meadows.
