Images: March photo contest winners

A look at the Daily Herald photo contest winners from the month of March.

This photo was taken in Northern Wisconsin in June of 2017. A doe cleans up her fawn after they crossed a shallow creek. Bob Esbensen of Palatine
This is a view from the Red Rock loop of mountains in Sedona, Arizona. I like the sharp stark contrast of the tree in the foreground against the red rock of the mountains in the background. Lynne Solway of Buffalo Grove
During my trip to South Padre Island last week, a dad and his son were feeding seagulls on the beach next to me and I think they mistakenly thought the phone I had out to take pictures was a piece of bread. The seagulls kept swooping down toward my phone. I took this shot in the mayhem. Linda Kuhn of Naperville
I took this picture of Cubs catcher Willson Contreras at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ on March 3 just prior to the Spring training game against the White Sox. Willson was preparing to warm up starting pitcher Yu Darvish and was looking up into the stands at autograph seeking fans. He obliged several of the fans! Cary Dudczak of Hoffman Estates
This bald eagle was captured over the Mississippi River searching for food. I like the shot because of the golden hour effect. Richard Stockman of Buffalo Grove
I took this photo a while back at a bike race in Geneva. It was very exciting. Each of the bikers had a winning look on their faces. There were quite a few laps and I enjoyed the race to the very end. John Balzanto of St. Charles
The Mackinaw Bridge in 2013. This angle of the photo certainly shows the expanse of the Western Hemisphere's longest suspension bridge. James Marsh of Gurnee
During the recent ice storm I captured this image. The cardinal really stands out against the dark branches and the ice. Brian Wallace of West Chicago
I took this photo of a screech owl at the Stillman Nature preserve on February 2, 2019. It was a gray day but I liked the color of this owl. Tom Egan of Streamwood
Scottsdale winter getaway. Bill Cary of Wheaton
The moon has been putting on such a good show this last month. We see it almost every night and this picture brings out the detail we don't usually see with the naked eye. Brian Wallace of West Chicago
I took this photo on a cold and rainy day in Chicago. I liked this usual perspective and the simplicity of the figure against the diagonal of the crosswalk. Robert M. Sharp of Gilberts
The Big Island of Hawaii. The combination and texture of the sunset, fire pit and palm trees caught my interest. Chuck Krumpoch of Kildeer
This was taken last Fall in Sister Bay, Door County, WI; The dynamic nature of a sunset was caught in this photograph as the richness of the colors on the horizon deepened as the sun lowered. The deep blue hues of the sky accentuated the reflective nature of the sailboat masts on the bay. Rick Jacobson of Libertyville
I took this photo at the March 11, 2019 Blackhawks vs. Coyotes game at the United Center. Hawk's forward Brendan Perlini scores his first career hat trick against his former team. Since there was less than 4 seconds left in the game at the time and the Blackhawks were ahead 6-1, this may be the only photo capturing Perlini's third goal as a lot of people had left by this time. John Wysocki of Mt. Prospect
