Oakton students, faculty mourn New Zealand mosque victims

Oakton Community College students and faculty joined with local clergy and other leaders at the school's Des Plaines campus Tuesday to mourn for the victims of terror attacks at two mosques in New Zealand this month.

The event was sponsored by College Relations, the Diversity Council, the Muslim Student Association the Office of the President and the Office of Access, Equity and Diversity and Student Life and Campus Inclusion.

Speakers included college President Joianne Smith, Vice President for Student Affairs Karl Brooks, Associate Pastor Greg Buell from the Village Presbyterian Church in Northbrook, and Imam Senad Agic of the Sabah Islamic Center in Franklin Park.

The college later Tuesday hosted a second vigil at its Skokie campus.

The events were held to honor the memories of the 50 people killed March 15 when a gunman opened fire on worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Center in Christchurch, New Zealand.
