Elgin residents who died in crash identified; Glendale Heights resident charged

Two Elgin residents killed in car crash were identified Thursday afternoon by the Kane County coroner's office, and a Glendale Heights man has been charged in their deaths.

Omar Pizano Zavala, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday in Elgin, and Norieli Villagomez, 26, died a few hours later at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, authorities said.

Zavala and Villagomez were in a 2018 Nissan Altima that was waiting to leave a business at Summit Street and Dundee Avenue in Elgin when a 2012 Honda sedan traveling west on Summit Street left the road and struck the Nissan, police said.

The driver of the Honda, 21-year-old Adrian Velasco, and a female passenger in the Honda were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, police said.

Velasco was charged Thursday evening by the Kane County state's attorney's office, according to the Elgin Police Department.

Velasco, of the 500 block of Gregory Avenue in Glendale Heights, was charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, two counts of reckless homicide, two counts of aggravated driving under the influence with no insurance, two counts of aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm and multiple traffic offenses, according to Elgin police.

Velasco is scheduled to appear Friday in bond court.

Autopsy results show Villagomez died of multiple injuries; an autopsy for Zavala will be conducted Friday, officials said.
