Broken gas line closes Army Trail Road in Glendale Heights for hours

A busy section of Army Trail Road in Glendale Heights was closed for around nine-and-a-half hours Tuesday because of a broken gas line.

Glendale Heights Police Deputy Chief Brandon Oliver said the section of Army Trail Road between Bloomingdale Road and Cardinal Drive was closed from around 9:30 a.m. to around 7 p.m.

Nicor worked throughout the day to stop the leak. Oliver said Nicor told police there was no danger of the gas igniting.

Oliver said the leak was caused by work being done in the area.

"I don't know if they hit the gas line or if the work caused the leak," Oliver said.

Gas service was disrupted for some nearby customers for part of the day.

Oliver said Glendale Hts. police officers were aided in diverting traffic from the scene by trained volunteers from the community emergency response team and other organizations.

Traffic is now down to one lane in each directed as Nicor crews continue to work in the area.
