Officials: Car fire sparks Wheeling townhouse blaze

One person is hospitalized after a fire at a Wheeling townhouse complex Friday, officials said.

Crews were called shortly after 10:30 a.m. to a car fire on the 1700 block of Sienna Court and, by the time they arrived, the fire had spread to three units of a nearby building, according to a news release from the Wheeling Fire Department.

Three people who were home at the time were able to escape, according to the release: One was taken to Northshore Glenbrook Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening; the other two were not hurt.

The fire appears to have started in car, which was parked outside the attached garage of one of the united, officials said. The cause is under investigation.

The damage is estimated at $380,000, the release said, but $670,000 was saved because of sprinklers and smoke detectors.
