Wheeling District 21 hires new business official

Micheal DeBartolo has been hired as the new assistant superintendent for finance and operations in Wheeling Township Elementary District 21, effective July 1.

For the past four years, he has held the same position at neighboring Prospect Heights Elementary District 23. He was a practicing school law attorney for the 16 years prior.

DeBartolo will replace Mary Werling, who has announced her retirement effective June 28. A search for a successor began in December with six candidates invited for interviews with district officials. The list was eventually narrowed and DeBartolo picked as the best candidate, officials said.

He will be paid $182,000 and get the district's standard fringe benefits package, but he has elected not to take the district's health insurance.
