First day of school after Labor Day in Wheeling District 21

Wheeling Township Elementary District 21 will have a later start date than normal next school year - after Labor Day - due to planned summer construction work to tighten security at building entrances and install air conditioning.

The school board Thursday approved the 2019-2020 calendar, which schedules the first day for Tuesday, Sept. 3, and the last day of school for Tuesday, June 9, pending any snow days. However, district officials say the winter and spring vacations both align with the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 calendar. They added that student start dates in future years will be similar to last summer's Aug. 22 first day.

"We are very sensitive to the child care issues that this late start may create and are actively exploring options we may be able to offer parents to support child care needs," district officials said in a news release.
