Round Lake Beach man faces ecstasy, cocaine charges

A 22-year-old Round Lake Beach man remained held at the Lake County jail Wednesday facing felony ecstasy and cocaine charges that could keep him behind bars for more than a decade.

Angel A. Castro, described by authorities as a documented gang member, is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and two counts of possession of a controlled substance stemming from his arrest during a traffic stop Tuesday.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, members of its Gang Task Force stopped a vehicle driven by Castro in the area of North Fairfield Road and Lake Shore Drive in Round Lake Heights about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Detectives arrested Castro after learning he didn't have a driver's license and later found him in possession of ecstasy and cocaine, sheriff's police said.

The most serious charge against Castro is a Class X felony punishable by a mandatory six to 30 years in prison, if he's convicted.

Castro, of the 1200 block of Barberry Lane, is in custody at the jail on $75,000 bail. He is next due in court March 13.

"Like I've said before, I am making it a priority to identify and arrest drug pushers in our communities," Sheriff John Idleburg said in an announcement of the arrest. "The primary responsibility of the Lake County Sheriff's Gang Task Force is to intercept these poisons before they make it into the hands of others, while holding drug pushers accountable."
