Downers Grove man charged with stealing medication at Jewel

A Downers Grove man caught red-handed stuffing medication down his pants in the Lisle Jewel is being held on $5,075 bail in DuPage County, authorities said Wednesday.

Police say an on-duty Lisle officer was purchasing food at the store at 2:53 p.m. Monday when the store's loss-prevention officer alerted him to Matthew McCrory, 32, of the 600 block of 67th Street, stuffing his pants.

Officials say the Lisle officer attempted to stop McCrory from leaving the store by shouting, "Stop! Police!" several times, but McCrory fled. The officer eventually caught and arrested McCrory in the Jewel parking lot.

The officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest, and was later treated and released from an area hospital.

McCrory is charged with one felony count of retail theft and one felony count of resisting a peace officer.

Officials also learned McCrory had an active failure to appear warrant for a previous theft charge.
