Two Elgin men charged with illegal gun possession

Two Elgin men were charged with illegal gun possession and other crimes Sunday night after police found a loaded handgun in their car, authorities said Tuesday.

Antony Oliva, 22, and Freddy Garcia, 24, were both charged with possession of a firearm by a street gang member, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a post on the Elgin Police Department's Facebook page Tuesday evening.

Elgin officers were called to the 600 block of Villa Street around 9:39 p.m. Sunday after a report of someone in a vehicle pointing a gun at a person. They soon found a the car matching a description provided by the 911 caller, the release said.

Oliva and Garcia were in the car and showed signs of being intoxicated, the release said; police searched the vehicle and found open alcohol and a loaded handgun.

Because Oliva was behind the wheel, police said, he also was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence.
