Aurora police seek witnesses to killing of 17-year-old; city's 2nd murder in 2019

Aurora police are asking for the public's help in the case of a 17-year-old who was shot and killed Monday night on the city's near southeast side.

Nicholas T. Rodriguez was found on a sidewalk on the 300 block of Spencer Street about 8:50 p.m. He had been shot several times.

Paramedics drove Rodriguez to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 9:30 p.m.

Police said they believe someone approached Rodriguez, of the 700 block of George Avenue, Aurora, on foot and opened fire.

"The motive for the shooting is not known but it does not appear to be a random act," police said in a social media post Tuesday, noting they are looking for suspect information or witnesses.

Residents with information or tips are asked to call the department's Investigations Division at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000 to leave an anonymous tip and to qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 if the information leads to any arrests.

Monday's shooting marked the city's second homicide this year.

An 18-year-old was shot the night of Jan. 23 on the city's near east side and died the next day.

Daniel Perez-Alvarez, of the 200 block of North Ohio Street, was shot about 9:50 p.m. near Claim and Beach streets while riding in a car with a 19-year-old man and two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, according to police.
