No students on school bus, no one hurt in Wheaton crash

No students were aboard a school bus Friday morning when it collided with a car and then slammed into a traffic signal along Gary Avenue at Thomas Road near the border of Wheaton and Carol Stream.

The bus was on its way to pick up students about 8 a.m. in Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200, but officials said no students were yet on board. No injuries were reported.

Wheaton Deputy Police Chief P.J. Youker said the driver of the sedan was cited in the crash. Police did not release either driver's name.

Jim Love, director of safety, risk management and training for Central School Bus, which operates the buses out of Carol Stream, said the drivers of both vehicles declined treatment from paramedics, and the Wheaton Fire Department confirmed no one was taken to a hospital.

Love said it is company policy to have any bus driver involved in a crash taken for drug and alcohol testing. The results of such tests usually are available within 24 hours.

Based on photos from the scene, Love said it appeared there was significant damage to both vehicles. Both the bus and the sedan remained on the scene when Wheaton Fire Department responders left and likely needed to be towed.

Youker said the intersection of Gary and Thomas was closed for about an hour during the initial response and investigation.
